Tucked behind a new-build home, this once-blank courtyard has been transformed into a gentle haven for wildlife and people alike.
Designed for a creative couple who’d recently moved in, the garden reflects their love of the natural world and desire to soften the hard landscaping that came with the property.
Having visited my Four Season Sanctuary garden at RHS Hampton Court and with a kind recommendation from Clive and Sue at Climate Change Gardening, they reached out with a clear vision:
They wanted something calm, beautiful, and brimming with life, a garden that would evolve through the year, and feel alive in every season.
As is often the case with new-build gardens, the space began life as a blank slate — a courtyard of clean lines and hard surfaces, but little in the way of greenery or charm. There was potential, but not yet personality.
The couple’s vision was clear: to create a garden that felt rich and inviting, full of texture and seasonal interest — a place where, birds, bees wildlife and people could all feel at home.
Structure, Texture and Stillness
The garden’s transformation began by introducing deep sleeper beds — simple, sturdy, and full of potential. These helped to ground the space, giving it shape and presence. Around the edges, hand-woven hazel screens lend a soft, rustic charm while offering privacy from neighbouring plots and a buffer from the wind.
This framework provided a quiet rhythm, allowing for looser, more naturalistic planting within. Here, softly arching stems and billowy forms spill across clean lines, echoing the balance between cultivated beauty and nature’s spontaneity.
It’s this contrast of structure and softness that gives the garden its sense of stillness. Even in the smallest spaces, thoughtful design can create a feeling of calm that lingers.
Designed for Wildlife, Styled for Living
Every plant chosen here earns its place. Summer sees bees and butterflies flitting through clouds of Nepeta, Salvia, and Achillea, reliable, nectar-rich favourites that bring colour and movement.
A clipped dome of yew adds evergreen formality, anchoring the planting and offering shelter in the colder months.
Overhead, a graceful Gleditsia triacanthos ‘Sunburst’ catches the light, its golden leaves casting dappled shade without overwhelming the space.
Although compact, this garden now hums with life and purpose. It’s become a space for morning coffees and evening reflections. A place to reconnect with the seasons, observe visiting wildlife, and enjoy the slow, satisfying rhythm of a garden finding its stride.
