On the East Lawn of Ely Cathedral, a landmark that has stood watch over the Fens for centuries, a new chapter of planting has begun.
Designer Tim Jennings was invited to enhance and expand the cathedral’s wildflower garden, building on the devoted work of the volunteer gardeners who first established this much-loved space.
The result is a garden that feels both timeless and fresh: a naturalistic design that places biodiversity and beauty at its heart.
Swathes of native wildflowers weave among ornamental perennials, grasses, and bulbs, creating a planting tapestry that hums with life through every season.
Devil’s-bit Scabious, Red Clover, and meadow grasses mingle with Astrantia, Digitalis, and Verbena bonariensis, plants chosen not only for their beauty, but for the rhythm of colour, structure, and texture they bring across the year.
Paths of soft gravel wind through the garden, inviting visitors to step in rather than stand back.
Timber uprights and insect habitats offer structure and shelter, while also sparking curiosity and play.
This is a garden designed to be lived in, a place where people and wildlife can share space, where the buzz of pollinators and the chatter of birds are part of the experience.
What makes this planting special is its sense of belonging. Rooted in the cathedral’s landscape, it reflects the natural cycles of the seasons and the gentle pace of nature.
